Glasgow Gailes, Irvine

Type - Links; Temporary greens - no;
Fairway mats - no; Online Green Fee - £25

The course - Glasgow Gailes Links is owned and managed by Glasgow Golf Club, the ninth oldest club in the world. Less than an hour from Glasgow, Gailes is a challenging links course - tough and traditionally Scottish - consistently selected by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St
Andrews as a final qualifying venue for the Open Championship when it is played at Royal Troon - which it will be in 2004.

Scotscraig Golf Club, Tayport, Fife

Type - Links; Temporary greens - no; Fairway
mats
- no; Online Green Fee - £22
(includes soup and a roll)

The course - From the first hole you will find fairways that are not over-generous but accommodating enough to the simple, straight strike. Many find it preferable to use irons off the tees throughout the front half. It is more open but still demanding on the homeward side. A gem!

Old Course Ranfurly, Bridge of Weir

Type - Parkland; Temporary greens - no; Fairway
mats
- no; Online Green Fee - £25 (includes
soup and a roll)

The course - This scenic parkland/moorland course offers superb views over the Firth of Clyde towards Ben Lomond and the Campsie Hills. Just six miles from Glasgow Airport, this challenging course demands steady nerve and a sweetly struck long iron at the daunting par 3, 16th hole. Special deal of two rounds, bacon roll and coffee, lunch and high tea all for £32

Stranraer Golf Club, Stranraer

Type - Parkland; Temporary greens - 2; Fairway
mats
- no; Online Green Fee - £12.50

The course - Set on the shores of Lochryan, with scenic views to take your breath away, this course will give all golfers an unforgettable game. This was the final course designed by former Open Champion
James Braid. Course Am record 66, Pro 67.

Kircudbright Golf Club, Kircudbright

Type - Parkland; Temporary greens - no; Fairway
mats
- no; Online Green Fee - £10

The course - Excellent quality and variety. There are some gentle slopes to climb but you are rewarded with magnificent panoramic views of the Dee Estuary and the surrounding countryside. Very warm welcome and worth a visit.

St Michaels Golf Club, Leuchars, Fife

Type - Parkland; Temporary greens - no; Fairway
mats
- no; Online Green Fee - £12.50

The course - St Michaels is able to compete with the other longer courses in the area and, from all reports, very well. The greens seem like they have been here for years. The 15th down toward the railway is a beauty.
